Karen Pratt

Karen Pratt is an enrolled member of the Ihanktonwanna, or Lower Yanktonai, from the Crow Creek reservation. She started writing poetry and short pieces while she was attending graduate school at DePaul University to complete a master’s degree in education. Upon moving back to South Dakota, she became a member of the Horse Barn poetry group in Sioux Falls.

She currently teaches high school and middle school English to students who are in treatment programs at Volunteers of America. Prior to teaching, Karen pursued a career in theater and commercial work in Chicago. She received a Joseph Jefferson award for acting in 1991. She is honored to be a part of the Oak Lake Writers’ Society and looks forward to more mentoring and learning about her culture from its members.
